Even though right now we have near sub zero temps in Chicago I had this idea as I was sewing my dress for Karen’s sew a-long for December 2013 that this wonderful dress tutorial would be easy to adapt to a dress for a mini doll.
This is my first attempt making the original pattern and here’s the original sundress pattern for the 18: American Girl doll that inspired me: dress tutorial.
This dress for the American Girl mini doll is so easy, and I say that as someone who has tried numerous other patterns for mini dolls without success! It’s also a great pattern to use up those little scraps of fabric that you have laying around. You can make it with or without the ribbon.
This is my first time with a pattern piece so I hope that everyone is able to use it! The 1 inch measurement is to scale, but the others may be slightly off because I rounded them to the nearest 1/4 inch.
First cut out two pattern pieces and if desired two pieces of ribbon at least 6 inches long. Mine were about 6 inches, but I think that even longer would give more flexibility. I suggest treating the ends with Fray Check or by melting them to prevent fraying.
Once they are cut out put them right side together and pin the ribbon near each corner of the bodice.
Put it on the doll and admire! This one has the ribbon wrapped and tied (gently) in the front.
Then switch it to the other side and admire some more! This one has it tied at the neck in a big bow.
Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!
